How to Handle a Leak During a Rainstorm

What to do if your roof leaks during a rainstorm:

Have you discovered a leak inside your home during heavy rainfall? Don't panic! We have some tips to   for you to deal with the situation until you are able to call your contractor out to assess the damage.

Step One: Stay calm. Many homeowners discover that their roof needs repair or replacement during a storm that reveals a leak inside the home. The best thing you can do in the moment, is to minimize any further damage.

Step Two: Take care of your home's interior. Before anything else, you want to focus your attention on the inside. Use a bucket, pan, or bowl to catch any falling water. Next you will want to make sure you dry any wet areas thoroughly.

Step Three: Try to find the source of the leak. This may be challenging, especially if you are not sure what you are looking for. Roof leaks can have many causes, such as plumbing or AC issues, however, if your roof only seems to leak during the rain, it is most likely a roofing issue.

If your gutters are clogged, this can also cause leaks, as the water has no place to go and will build up and begin to seep into your roof. If able, check your gutters to see if this could be a factor.

Another thing you will want to check, again if possible, is your chimney flashing for gaps and inspect around any vents or slopes. These are also common causes of leaks.

Of course, your contractor can assess these areas as well, but any information you can give them when you are able to call them out will help them find a solution quicker and get your repair complete.

If you find yourself tending to a leak, we are here for you. Give us a call and we will get someone scheduled to assess your home as soon as possible.

If you notice a significant amount of missing shingles or shingles that have missing granules and clogging gutters, it is most definitely time to replace your full roofing system. Are your shingles curling at the edges or discolored? These are sure signs that the efficiency of your roof is declining. The biggest concern would be sagging in the roof, as this points to rotting and you may need some, if ...
