New Roof Frequently Asked Questions

                                          NEW ROOF FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How do I know when I need a new roof?

A: Here are some signs that it may be time for a roof replacement:

-Wet spots on ceiling, in the attic, and in crawl spaces

-Shingles are curled, buckling, missing or broken

    -Shingles are blistering

-Shingles are aging (you will see dark streaks, which are algae growing) and missing granules

-You notice signs of root rot (it has a spongy feeling when you walk on it)

-There is water backup in your eaves

-Your flashing is damaged or completely compromised.

-If your roof is 12-15 years old, it may be time to get ahead of any problems that may arrive from a         damaged roof!

Q: How long will my new roof last?

A: There really is no specific answer to this question, unfortunately. How long the roof lasts will depend on the type of roofing material used, the weather conditions in your area and if your home is properly ventilated. Asphalt shingles are the most common shingles used on homes, especially in Texas. An asphalt roof should last you at least 15-20 years, but this again, will depend on the type of weather that is endured during the lifespan of your roof. Keep in mind that if you have insurance, your insurance company will more than likely pay to replace your roof if there is enough damage! All you pay is your deductible!

Q: How long does it take for a new roof to be installed?

A: This depends on the size of your home, but it is typically 1-2 days for your old shingles to be removed and for the new roofing system to be installed.

Q: How do I prepare for my roof replacement?

A: Below is a list of tips to prepare your home for a new roof!

-Consider your children and pets. Roofing construction will be quite noisy as the roofers will be on top of the roof walking around, removing the components and then installing the new shingles which will be nailed to the decking. Make arrangements to calm your children and your pets and make sure that they do not enter the work zone during the process.

-Relocate your vehicles. The roofers will need access to the materials and tools during the installation and it is safer to keep your vehicle away from the areas that the old materials may fall.

-Remove wall decorations and hanging items. The roofers will be nailing the shingles during the installation which could cause anything that has been hung to fall off of your walls. You also may want to secure anything breakable just to be sure!

Q: Does my new roof come with a warranty?

A: Your contractor may offer a workmanship warranty, as well as the shingle manufacturer's warranty depending on what brand of shingle you decide to go with. Cover 3 Roofing provides all customers with a 2 year workmanship warranty. As for the shingle manufacturer's warranty, we typically use Atlas Shingles, as they offer the best value and warranties for our homeowners. Repair, Patch or Replace??

REPAIR, PATCH OR REPLACE? When to repair or patch your roof: Every roof needs to be replaced eventually, but the good news is that you may be able to repair or patch it! If there is only minor damage, your roof is still fairly new, or only a small area has been affected, this may be a sign that only a repair or patch job is warranted. A fallen branch, or even wind could affect only a certain area or areas of the roof.  When your roof may need  to  be fully replaced: As mentioned in our last blog post, age is one of the most common reasons your roof would need to be replaced. If you notice a significant amount of missing shingles or shingles that have missing granules and clogging gutters, it is most definitely time to replace your full roofing system. Are your shingles curling at the edges or discolored? These are sure signs that the efficiency of your roof is declining. The biggest concern would be sagging in the roof, as this points to rotting and you may need some, if ...
